Shirley Brill - Clarinet

...Equipped with a clear and full sound, she is brilliantly beguiling, performing with an intimacy that comes from deep within. She gently intonates the high notes in order to allow the full bass to emanate crisply and without effort. Runs, trills, staccatos and legato lines - everything flows with mellifluence. She converses happily within the rapid movements; her Adagio sings...

...Shirley Brill, the soloist of Brahms' Clarinet Quintet in the Aviv quartet's program was a veritable discovery for those who had not yet heard this young musician. Surprising, at this tender age, was her maturity of approach, understanding and interpretation of this demanding work. Brill takes her time, savoring fully each note and phrase without ever rushing forward, shaping melodic units with a long, patient and sufficient breath, producing a singing instrumental tone with a vocal timbre, and playing her part with pleasing, natural flexibility...

...The haunting melody of the third movement's clarinet solo seemed to pose a philosophical question to the audience. Rising tones emerged from nothingness, leading to birdsong passages. Performed in the exquisite atmosphere of an open-air basilica surrounded by the sounds of actual birds, the music became mystical, striking the deepest inner chords...

...A fruitful partnership was already evident in Weber's Grand Quintet for clarinet and string ensemble, with Brill unswervingly firing up the ensemble. The Mannheim audience was enraptured with the young woman right from the beginning with the masterful opening Allegro. In the second movement, Fantasia, the strings wove a tapestry, both melancholy and menacing, on which Brill expressively embroidered a lyrical melodic line. She uttered the final spell with a solo sequence out of thin air, as only a clarinet can. In the third movement, too, Brill's clarinet sounds enchanted the audience. Though composed for clarinet and string quartet, the chamber orchestra version of Weber's Quintet assumed festive qualities.
Brill and the orchestra played Dott's Concertino passionately, with sparks flying...

...Brill displayed vitality, endearing charm, and intense lyric expression in her clarinet playing. Moreover, she successfully answered the demanding challenges of emulating the legendary Benny Goodman. Aner emerged as an ensemble pianist with a real presence. Far from remaining in the shadow of a mere accompanist, he recognizably emphasized the characteristic features of these works' highly independent piano parts. The maturity with which these four players performed Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of Time" was much beyond what one would normally expect of such youthful musicians. One could only marvel at their sensitivity in capturing the spirituality of this elusive masterpiece...
- The Jerusalem Post

...The two artists have just won the Possehl-Musikpreis - much deserved, as everyone present was able to hear. Brill plays the clarinet with great confidence, sensitivity and wonderful lightness. Even in the softest pianissimo, she demonstrates full control over her sound - which is quite admirable, for example, in the second of the "Four Pieces" by Berg. No phrase is too simple or inconsequential for her to overlook; she plays each one beautifully. A descending scale in the middle section of the Brahms F-Minor Sonata's third movement is simply delightful to experience. In her spirited rendition of Bernstein's Sonata, Brill also hints at the passion resonating within.
Aner is in no way second to his partner - he is certainly more than just an accompanist. His playing is distinguished by elegance and lightness, and by the precise arrangement of leading and secondary voices...
